In this episode, we focused on the disciples…. their fear & their sudden change to fearlessness.
The disciples of Jesus fled when He was arrested (Matthew 26:56, Mark 14:50-52), denied that they knew Him (Matthew 26:74-75), and hid themselves in a locked room after the crucifixion, scared and uncertain about what to do next (John 20:19).
We later see these same men preaching the gospel without fear, getting arrested, imprisoned, stoned, beaten, & killed for their faith!
In Acts 12:1-3, it talks of the disciples being imprisoned, the apostle James was killed (beheaded) with a sword, and Simon Peter was arrested and imprisoned as well.
Later, Peter was crucified - the same Peter who denied Christ 3 times! “Doubting” (i.e., “fearful”) Thomas was speared to death. Andrew, Peter’s brother, was also crucified. When he was being crucified, he stated “I have long desired and expected this happy hour.” What a change from the man who was hiding in a locked room!! Mark (perhaps the one who fled naked) died after being dragged through the streets by horses. Most of the other apostles also were killed because they refused to deny Christ.
What brought about this change? What turned them from fearful, fleeing men to fearless, powerful evangelists and brave martyrs?
The event was the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The disciples met the resurrected Jesus Christ, and that changed everything!!
So our question to you is… Have YOU met the resurrected Christ? The same Holy Spirit who resurrected Christ is now in US… have you realized that?
Read 1 Corinthians 15:3-6, 14, 17-19 … Without the resurrection, our faith is futile, our preaching is useless, and there is no forgiveness of sins! The resurrection is KEY to our faith, to overcoming fear, to standing firm for Christ.
The key to overcoming fear: Meeting the resurrected Christ! NO matter where we are in life - if we have a fear of failure, success, finances, the future - that power, the same power that is in Christ that rose him from the dead, is in us and is helping us to overcome fear.
The disciples realized that truth - and it gave them the power to stand up for Christ, spread the gospel no matter what the cost, and even die for the sake of the risen Savior.
